What is a Dental Appliance?
Maintaining good oral health is more than just brushing and flossing. If you snore or experience the symptoms of sleep apnea, dental appliances can help preserve and protect your oral structures and contribute to your overall health.
Dental appliances offered at Dentistry @ Momentum are used to help protect the health of your oral cavity.
Snoring & Sleep Apnea Appliances
Sleep disorders can disrupt your sleep and negatively impact your overall health and well-being.
For patients who snore, your relaxed throat tissues cause the airway to restrict, creating the sound of snoring as oxygen is forced past. For patients with sleep apnea, your throat tissues relax and obstruct the airway, forcing the brain to wake you up to breathe.
At Dentistry @ Momentum, we provide custom-fitted oral appliances to move the lower jaw and tongue muscles to open the airway. This helps improve your flow of breath and may prevent you from waking up throughout the night.
Signs of Sleep Apnea
Sleep apnea is a serious sleep disorder that causes you to repeatedly stop and start breathing. You may be suffering from sleep apnea if you experience any of the following symptoms:
- Breathing is interrupted during sleep for between 10 seconds to 1 minute or more (often noticed by your sleep partner)
- Loud snoring
- Insomnia (not able to stay asleep)
- Struggling for air while sleeping
- Morning headaches
- Lack of energy or sleepiness during the day, even after a full night's sleep
