Swelling, Pain or Discomfort
If you notice sudden moderate to severe swelling in your face, mouth, or neck, or if you are experiencing significant pain or discomfort in or around your mouth, call us as soon as possible.
These symptoms can indicate infection, trauma, or another urgent dental issue that may worsen quickly without immediate care. Prompt attention helps prevent the spread of infection, reduces the risk of more serious complications, and increases the likelihood of saving any affected teeth.
In the meantime, you can take steps to help manage the discomfort: apply a cold compress to the affected area, take an over-the-counter pain reliever, and gently rinse your mouth with salt water to help remove any debris that may be contributing to the pain.
When you arrive at your appointment, our dentists will carefully assess your condition, diagnose the cause, and recommend appropriate treatment to address the issue.

Lost Fillings or Crowns
If you have a broken or lost filling or crown, try to locate it and keep it in a safe container. Rinse your mouth gently with warm water to keep the area clean, and avoid chewing on that side of your mouth to prevent further damage.
It's crucial to have your dentist repair a lost filling or crown promptly. With this restoration no longer in place, the tooth's inner layers may be exposed, increasing the risk of pain, infection, and additional damage.
Prompt attention also helps prevent food and bacteria from entering the exposed area, potentially leading to tooth decay, which would require more extensive treatment to resolve.
Call our office as soon as possible to schedule an appointment so our dentists can assess the tooth and repair or replace the restoration.

Chipped or Broken Teeth
If you chip or break a tooth, try to locate any broken pieces and place them in a clean container to bring with you to your appointment, as your dentist may be able to reattach them. Even if you cannot find the pieces, call our office right away so our dentists can assess the damage and recommend the appropriate treatment.
Seeking emergency care is essential because a chipped or broken tooth can expose its inner layers, leaving it vulnerable to sensitivity, infection, and further breakage.
Prompt evaluation also helps determine whether the injury has affected the tooth's root or surrounding structures, which may not always be visible but can lead to more serious complications if left untreated.
In the meantime, avoid chewing on the affected side and rinse your mouth gently with warm salt water to keep the area clean.

Knocked-Out Teeth
If you have a tooth that has been knocked out, call our office as soon as possible. Try to locate it and handle it carefully by the crown, avoiding the roots.
If possible, gently reinsert the tooth into its socket and bite down lightly to hold it in place. If reinsertion isn’t possible, keep the tooth moist by placing it in a glass of milk or holding it in your mouth until you can reach our office. Applying a cold compress to your cheek near the affected area can help reduce pain and swelling.
It’s extremely important to seek emergency care right away because a knocked-out tooth has the best chance of being saved if it is treated within the first hour.
The longer the tooth remains out of the mouth, the more the living cells on the root surface dry out, reducing the likelihood that the tooth will reattach successfully. Prompt care also allows your dentist to address any underlying trauma to the gums, jawbone, or surrounding teeth that may not be immediately visible.
